Dear John | ePub

This is definitely one of Spark's top novels based on one thing, reality. This book does not give you a fairy tale ending but it still has every love guru on the edge of their seats. Spark's use of romantic vocabulary and word choice captures the reader just like he does in every novel but this time it is a fairy tale beginning as opposed to a fairy tale ending which is what Nicholas Spark's fans are used to.

This novel differs because it forces readers to live in the moment with characters John Tyree and Savannah Lynn Curtis as they live each day as it were their last day together. Spark's word choice and point of view in which the story is told keeps readers going and makes them enjoy the entire novel as opposed to waiting for a surprise ending.

While John is on leave in North Carolina and starts to fall for Savannah Sparks could have focused on the fact that he was leaving and that he might never get to see her again but instead he focuses on the moment that is happening between the two of them. "Living in the moment" is a reoccurring theme indicator throughout the novel because once John leaves for all they know it could be their last moment together. When they are starting to say goodbye for the first time John reflects, "Beneath us, I could hear the waves crashing against the pilings. A flock of seagulls passed overhead, and I leaned in to kiss her, my lips barely brushing hers. Her breath smelled of cinnamon and mint, and I thought again of coming home" (139). Nicholas Sparks has the characters reflect in such a beautiful way because he is realistic in this novel and doesn't try and fool anyone into thinking that these characters will be together forever and nothing will change that because reality is that something will come between them, especially distance.
